Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mostly contains news from various theatres of war. Most articles are short updates on skirmishes, but there are several larger ones. News from Washington: an inquiry into censorship of the press, report of the House Judiciary Committee, bridges destroyed by the rebels as they retreated from Manassas, increased railroad facilities between New York and Washington,and debates on the tax bill in House of Representatives. Other articles on fighting in Eastern Kentucky and Island Number Ten. Articles dealing with issues on the Southern coast, including Florida and New Bern, North Carolina. Includes law and monetary market reports. News on naval engagements on the Mississippi and in Gulf of Mexico. List of marriages and deaths. Pages 5-7 mostly has advertisements.
