Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed on page four is the act of Congress to establish the Judicial Courts of the United States (continued in the 2nd issue of the Gazette, see GLC08757.02). A letter of John Adams dated 16 October 1780 concerning troops in the Revolutionary War is published on page 1. Other articles deal with the public debt of the Union, President George Washington, and the Senate.
