Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discussing the military service of African Americans, states "The very act of arming them, of equalizing us with them ... is a lawless, revolutionary act, subversive of all these distinctions of races, which have saved us Anglo-Saxons, Celts, and Teutons of the North from the amalgamation and fraternity of the Latin races of the Southern part of this continent, and which there have been destructive to both." Contains numerous letters to the editor. Includes various articles covering local and national politics, as well as Civil War events. Includes several articles discussing Clement Laird Vallandigham, a United States Representative from Ohio. Contains a report on the uselessness of military chaplains.

Medary served as the territorial Governor of Minnesota 1857-1858 and of Kansas 1858-1860.
