Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A retouched variant of Ostendorf O-55 with D. Appleton & Co. imprint on reverse. Ostendorf pp. 88-89 believed that Fredericks might have been the original photographer and dated the original negative to March-June 1861. (See GLC 4584 by C.D. Fredericks, in fact a variant of O-55.)
