Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Natural Bridge, Virginia" circa 1861-1877. Depicts the Natural Bridge, and Cedar Creek. Three figures stand by the creek edge looking up at the bridge. Engraved by James Charles Armytage after a painting by William H. Bartlett. The land where the Natural Bridge, Virgina, is located was at one time owned by Thomas Jefferson.
