Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Evening on the Connecticut" dated 1861. Depicts a man and woman picnicing on the edge of the Connecticut River. The man holds a fishing pole over his shoulder while the woman sits in a relaxed position. Their row boat is docked on the rivers edge. Engraved by William Wellstood from the original painting by Aaron Draper Shattuck (misspelled as Shuttuck). The painting was in possession of the artist at time of engraving.
