Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Action Between the Constitution and the Guerriere" circa 1861-1877. Depicts the naval battle of August 19,1812 between the USS Constitution and the HMS Guerriere. The Constitution destroys the Guerriere's mast and sails. Engraved by J. Rogers after a painting by J.B. Chapin.
