Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Charleston, S.C. in 1780," published in 1850. Depicts a view of the Charleston Customs House and port. The customs house was at the center of Charleston, South Carolina's bustling trade in rice, indigo, and slaves. Engraved by George Palmer Putnam.
