Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Battle of Long Island" circa 1861-1877. Depicts the Continental Army retreating towards Cowanus Creek after combat with highly skilled British forces. Caption notes, "retreat of the Americans under General Stirling across Gowanus Creek." Engraved after a paiting by Alonzo Chappel. Engraver unknown. Original painting in possession of the publisher at time of engraving.
