Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Treason of Arnold" dated 1857. Depicts Benedict Arnold persuading Major John Andre to hide documents in his boot. Caption notes "Arnold persuades Andre to conceal the papers in his boot." Engraved by William Wellstood after an original painting by Charles F. Blauvelt. Original painting in possession of the publisher at time of engraving.
