Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Surrender of Colonel Rall at the Battle of Trenton" dated 1866. Depicts Colonel Johann Rall and his troops surrendering to George Washington at the Battle of Trenton. Rall clutches a wound that will later prove fatal. Engraved from a painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publisher at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
