Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter to her brother Horatio upon reaching Savannah. She speaks extensively of their trip from New York, which lasted fifteen days due to their encountering bad weather. She mentions several social engagements she has had since reaching Savannah, and speaks of her plans to travel to Washington County, Georgia.

Aurelia Hale was born in Glastonbury, in Hartford, Connecticut sometime before 20 December 1798.
