Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Congress A bill to be entitled an act to provide for organizing, arming and disciplining the militia of the Confederate States, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the Confederate States, and for calling them forth to execute the laws of the Confederate States, suppress insurrections and repel invasions.

Confederate act enrolling all able bodied men of in the army, except those that have special exemptions. Also details the organization and hierarchy of the Confederate army, lists those who are exempted from service, gives the President the power to call the militia.
