At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Argues for constitutional amendments to abolish slavery, establish universal citizenship and prosecute treason. Issued during the ratification process of the Thirteenth Amendment proposes a number of amendments, and discusses them in context of constitutional theory and Civil War history. The Thirteenth Amendment would soon be ratified, followed by the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, which would be similar to some of the ideas put forward in this pamphlet. Published by the Loyal Publication Society, which published over one hundred pamphlets on various political topics during the Civil War era.

Francis Lieber was president of the Loyal Publication Society, adviser to President Abraham Lincoln and professor of political science at Columbia College.
