Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Noted as a list. Items include "Copy of an Intercepted Letter directed to the Duc de Mirepoise, dated America Jan. 6th: 1756. Recd. March," "Additional Instructions to Maj. Genl. Johnson, relative to the Indians of the Six Nations under his Command, dated New York Dec. 25th 1755," "Abstract of so much of Gov. Shirleys Letters, as related to the Resolution of the Council at Albany, that 3000 Troops should march against Fort Duquesne, & that such an Expedition should be recommended to the Western Governments," among others. Gilt edges. Watermarked with a fleur-de-lis, V, backward C, L and VI.
