Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes of his arrest, "I desire to know what is the extent of the limits of my confinement. When you informed me that I was placed under arrest, the condition was that I would confine myself to the limits of my camp. I wish to know if this means the camp of my quarters or my division..." With Alexander Pendleton endorsement on verso, "The limits of Maj. Gen. J.A. Early's arrest are extended to embrace all points within the limits of this army."
