Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Documents the activities of Thompson Baxter of Quincey, Massachusetts, and his store in Stockton, California. Includes letters to and from his wife, printed cartoon panel ("This is a true Picture of Callifornia I have seen it And experienced it myself T. Baxter"), bank drafts illustrated with Gold Rush scenes, and Baxter's descriptive business ledger, dating from June 1850 through October 1852.
