Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A square-shaped textile piece with blue and white braided fringe. In the center, there is a blue circle with gold edge. On the blue circle is a red circle over a white star with gold wings. In each corner of the textile, there is a blue airplane. The textile is also adorned with red and gold stars between these airplanes. On the bottom, it says "Selfridge Field" in decorative red font, and below that in blue, "Michigan." On the back, there is additional lining with one edge unattached.
