At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Postcard to Cordelia Williams from Eugene Williams. He writes on the reverse that the scene on the front of postcard is where he goes boating. He mentions that he took his exams recently and is waiting for results. He also says he is happy to hear that his brother, H. Hamilton Williams, will be attending Cornell for his PhD. The top left of the postcard describes the scene on the front, which is where the men spend their leisure time.
