At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document is typed by Lt. Col. Hubert D. Barnes to the Adjutant General in Washington, D.C. detailing the month of March for the troop. A table of battle and non battle casualties is included and a summary of damage to the enemy. The men watched a movie this month, the first recreation in three months. The troops continued moving from Bruhl, Germany after leaving Colmar.
