At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This is a photograph of 83 members of the 969th Field Artillery Battalion. They are standing in rows with 13 sitting on the ground in front with 6 men reclining in front of them. There is a sign that reads Headquarters Battery 969 F and features 2 cannons crossed on the bottom. There are four offices in the first standing row towards the center.
