At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from Bobi dated April 28, 1965. Pertains to Roseann's engagement to Bill, his military service, Bobi's pregnancy and her husband Vince. Bobi asks if Bill has received his commission. Expresses concern that Vince may not come back home after his stint in the Reserves is over. She mentions her children, a few friends, and her and Vince's moving plans. Originally forwarded to Roseann's parents.
