At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to William E. Johnson from Roseann dated May 6, 1965. Writes to Bill, jesting but disappointed that she had not received any mail from him since he has been in California. She had "tore upstairs after work" only to find "Nothing." She jokes that her "wrath would have been impossible" if he had not sent a "sweet note this morning."
