At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to William E. Johnson from Roseann dated May 21, 1966. Pertains to spending the evening with coworker, Sally. The evening consisted of two moves at the drive-in: "Darling" and "Cat Ballou." Roseann writes that she misses Bill. She jokes that she has had "visions of...slipping overboard from the quarterdeck," but she does not want to pass out from him squeezing her too tightly when they see each other again.
