Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to William E. Johnson from Roseann dated June 15, 1966. Gives updates on family and friends; mentions an insurance claim on an expected package for Bill; and a reverse service charge from Union Park. She mentions watching a TV show about Wall Street that only contained two cuts of women in the scenes. Writes that she and Mr. Anger from Victaulic discussed both being from New York City's vicinity. She closes by mentioning the photographs she has been sending to Bill and comments on her gratitude that her workday is almost done.
