At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A photograph of an African American soldier posing in front of a fuel truck. In the background there is a US Army fuel truck. The truck is marked as belonging to the 3rd division 2nd to 13th units. It is also marked as HQ 116, and certified for 18 ton bridges. Due to insignia the soldier is a private.
