Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "10. Lieutenant Russell Brown" of a portrait of pilot Lt. Russell Brown climbing into a cockpit, two aircrafts in the background, one falling from an airstrike. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing Brown's attack against two MIG-15s near the Manchurian border.

Russell J. Brown, was a 25-year old, first lieutenant flying a F-80C "Shooting Star" when he shot down two MIG-15s near North Korea. This was considered one of the first jet versus jet battle.
