Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "24. General 'Ike' in Command" portrait of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in military uniform with the planet Earth in the background. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative commending his accomplishments during World War II, and that he has been chosen to continue to lead the effort against communist.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), also known as "Ike", was an American Army general who served as the 34th President of the United States. Eisenhower's former military experience proved to be effect in diplomacy with the Chinese government. He did threaten use of nuclear force if they did not comply.
