Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "32. UN Counterattack" depicting soldiers fighting a battle with bayonets on snowy hillsides. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing a military victory over North Korean on January 9, 1951, involving bayonet combat during a snowstorm, claimed winning "several important hilltop objectives."
