Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "35. Visit by Red Police" depicting a scene of policemen searching a family's home. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describes a scenario by which a Russian family is arrested for listening to a radio station known as "Voice of America." Text implies who the culpable party is and surmises that spies from the "Red leaders" may be likely perpetrators.

Voice of America is a government-funded international broadcasting news source. It began in 1947 as a response to Soviet Union propaganda aimed against the United States. Any other targeted communist-country (such as China, Cuba, Bulgaria, Poland and North Korea) began jamming broadcast transmissions.
