At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter that accompanied a copy of a sermon (not included) that he believes, "The perusal of it will afford you some pleasure, in particular after dinner. It hath the same effect upon me as opium" he continues writing that he bought a few copies of it as "A heavy tax upon the honor of being called the brother to an Author."
