At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Ella's Night, A Tribute to Miss Ella Fitzgerald," dated December 1, 1968. This commemorates an evening in the New York Coliseum sponsored by the Tau Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Fitzgerald was honored for a financial contribution she made to the Martin Luther King Foundation and to the Tau Omega Scholarship Fund, as well as for her service as a civil rights activist. Contains messages to Ella Fitzgerald from government officials, society members, sorority members, and fellow musicians.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded at Howard University in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization founded by African American women at a university.

Tau Omega, the oldest chapter, was established in 1925. Their main objectives are community organization in Harlem, NY and awarding scholarship to high school students.
