At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Volume 48, No. 3 issue of "Commentary" dated September 1969. Features article, "The Fantasy of Black Nationalism" by Theodore Draper. Details the history of black nationalism from slavery to the Black Panther movement.

Black Panther Movement was started by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in 1966. They were active throughout the United States, UK and Algeria until the 1980s. Their purpose was to practice arming citizens and patrole police brutality against African Americans. By 1969, social community programs such as health clinics and Free Breakfast for Children were main staples.
