At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One printing entitled, "How the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Began," written by Mary White Ovington dated 1951. Details the first months of the NAACP, recounting persons intially involved such as William English Walling, W.E.B. du Bois, among others. Last page contains a list of the NAACP officers and board of directors for the year 1951.
