At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One comic book entitled, "Your Future Rests...In Your Hands," by Larry Lieber dated 1964. Illustrates characters discussing racial inequality in housing and education in African American communities; Steve Baxter of NAACP Voter Registration Committee advocates for African Americans to take the vote more seriously as well as how to register to vote.

This comic was printed the year that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed. The act prohibits race discrimination in voter registration as well as segregating schools.
