At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "The more Women at work the sooner we will Win!" printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, dated 1943. Poster features a woman standing inside an acrylic dome fitting holes into it. The poster also says, "Women Are Needed Also As: Farm Workers Waitresses Timekeepers Laundresses Typists Bus Drivers Elevator Operators Teachers Salespeople Taxi Drivers Messengers Conductors - and in hundreds of other war jobs! See your local U.S. Employment Service." The identifying number at the bottom of the poster is OWI poster No. 52 O-517134. There is a stamp reading, "Wm. A. Donovan," and the text, "OWI 52," on the back of the poster.
