At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "5th War Loan," printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, dated 1944. Poster features a broom labeled, "Extra War Bonds" sweeping away ripped Nazi and Japanese flags, as well as a broken Japanese katana and a bullet-riddled Nazi helmet. The identifying numbers at the bottom of the poster are WFD 911 and O-581632. It also notes that it is an official U.S. Treasury Poster.
