At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Power for Victory" dated 1942-1945. Poster features a sailor standing in a crow's nest. Behind him is a map of the world in red. The poster also reads, "Merchant Seamen man the lifelines!" The poster has a shield in it that reads, "United Seamen's Service in cooperation with the War Shipping Administration Serves War-Battered Merchant Seamen on The Six Continents USS shares in the National War Fund." The title of the poster is on the back in pencil.
