At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled "Bridge Partners" printed by Autocar, dated December 27, 1943. Poster features an Autocar mobile derrick as it helps lay a pontoon bridge in the background other Autocar vehicles shoot into the sky. The poster reads in part, "Autocar is proud to cooperate with the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Air Forces. Keep your own essential Autocars rolling, while our armed forces keep the enemy reeling." A stamp on the back has the date of December 27, 1943, and the note, "Posted Lower Plant."

Autocar is a truck manufacturer established in 1897. During World War II, they supplied over 37,000 armored half-trucks, all-wheel-drive prime movers, and standard production models, including the Model U, for the overseas war effort.
