At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph released by Associated Press dated May 1, 1956. Shows military trucks and men parading in front of the Lenin Stalin Mausoleum. The press release attached to the photo reports the parade was of 5,000 troops and equipment and took forty-two minutes to pass the reviewing stand. The banner on the mausoleum has been translated, "Under the banner of Marxism - Leninism under the leadership of the communist party- forward to the victory of communism." The photo is stamped on the back with Associated Press information.
