At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by Associated Press dated June 9, 1956. Shows Major General Leonard D. Heaton, Walter Reed Hospital Commandant, indicating the location of an incision on his body as he stands in front of the camera. The incision in question was made during an emergency surgery on President Eisenhower. The photo is stamped on the back with Associated Press information.
