At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated November 1, 1956. Shows three cars parked outside the White House. The press release reports that the cars were from an emergency meeting of President Eisenhower, the National Security Council, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Civilian Secretaries of the Armed Services. The meeting was to discuss methods of ending hostilities in the Middle East. The photo is stamped on the back with International News Photos information and the date.
