At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated November 6, 1956. Shows a group of men walking towards the photographer. There are other men watching as they pass. The attached press release reports that Hungarian freedom fighters are walking directly towards Austria's border guards. The release also notes that the rebellion in Hungary was, "stamped out" by the Soviet Union on the weekend. The photo is stamped on the back with International News Photos information.
