At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The attached press release states that the woman in the photo is Mrs. John T. Martin the mother in law of George V. Allen who was being sworn is as the head of the U.S. Information Agency. The date has been approximated based on when George V. Allen became the head of the U.S. Information Agency. The back of the photo is stamped with International News Photo information
