At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated March 17, 1957. Shows two soldiers on a roof raising the Egyptian flag. There are six armed soldiers on the ground standing at attention. The attached press release states that the flag is being lifted on the Rafa railroad station after Egypt took administrative control over Gaza. The photo is stamped on the back with the date and International News Photos information.
