At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by Associated Press dated November 13, 1957. Shows Air Force One landing with the capitol building dome visible in the background. The press release that is part of the photo reports that the pale flew 5,204 miles from Buenos Aries in 11 hours 5 minutes. It was an automatic record as the first nonstop flight between capitols. The photo is stamped on the back with Associated Press information.
