At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Jack Gerber to Dorothy Silbiger dated May 2, 1943. Jack writes that mutual friends, Betty and Sam, just got married and should be home from their honeymoon soon. He complains about how much work he has to do and how busy they are with classes. He reports that it's about a year of schooling condensed into four months. He apologizes for the letter being so short, but he has to be fast with everything. This letter is written on Camp Davis stationery.
