Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Lenore Holbrooke to Richard Jerome Silbiger, dated September 9, 1943. Lenore writes to her nephew that she bought and sent a box of cookies that his father said he likes. She hopes all is well, and that the heat in Florida wasn't too bad for him this last summer.
