At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Helen Millet, "Rocky Hill Ranch," Norton Hill, New York, dated August 14, 1945, from Sgt. C. Ratsch, regarding the end of World War II. News was learned from Domei News Agency and a Thanksgiving service would be held Friday evening. Ratsch expresses excitement for peace. Signed by "Unk."

Carl Ratsch was a prominent member of Oak Hill, NY who established a printing business. He enlisted to join the army on March 25, 1942. Helen, in this correspondence, is his sister and married to Ernest Millet.
