At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Emergency Legislation for Relief and Regulation of the Steam Railways of the United States--Message from the President of the United States," dated May 4, 1933, recommends three measures for relief of railway transportation; repealing recapture provisions from the Interstate Commerce Commission Act, railway companies should be regulated by the ICC and the creation of a Federal coordinator of transportation.
